The Matrix to be shown in 12K LED dome shared reality

The film will be shown in its original format on 27-metre LED domes at Cosm in Los Angeles and Dallas, with surrounding content reflecting the scenes on screen.

Groundbreaking science fiction film The Matrix is to be shown at Cosm’s 12K LED dome shared reality venues.

The screenings, which will begin on 6 June at Cosm in Los Angeles and Dallas, are part of a multi-film partnership with Warner Bros Pictures and immersive cinema company Little Pictures.

The Matrix will play in its original format, with the environment around it on the 27-metre dome reflecting scenes from the film.

The screenings add experiential cinema to the live sport for which Cosm venues have become known since opening last year.

Jeb Terry, CEO and president at Cosm and a former NFL football player, said: "As we built this business, we were confident that live sports would thrive in shared reality, transporting fans to the sidelines of their favourite sport.

"Now with The Matrix, we’re expanding into cinema, transporting fans into the scenes of their favourite films.

"Instead of simply watching Neo enter the matrix, audiences will go with him, experiencing the journey like never before.”

Cosm announced that it had raised $250m to fund its expansion, including new venues, last year.

Little Cinema, founded by former DJ Jay Rinsky, has been remixing cult classic films as live performances, interactive experiences and sensory storytelling for 10 years.

The company's previous partners include WarnerMedia, Paramount Pictures and Amazon Prime Video, with The Wizard of Oz and The Fifth Element among its notable productions.

Little Cinema added virtual projects to its repertoire during the pandemic, and recent projects have included fitting 60,000 fans of the Netflix series Bridgerton inside a single virtual theatre for a "sneak peak" fan experience on Valentine’s Day,2024.

Meanwhile, the most high-profile experiential cinema project of recent times has been Postcards from Earth, shown on the 16K x 16K wraparound LED screen at Sphere Las Vegas.

Sphere Entertainment is reportedly spending £80m on its own experiential adaptation of the Wizard of Oz.

This investment includes film restoration, upscaling to 16K, panoramic reformatting, spatial audio remastering and synchronisation of 4D sensory effects, according to one report.

Sphere has also shown an immersive film of the inaugural U2 residency, shot using its 18K Big Sky camera.
